Say GOODBYE to Dance Bag Stink!

While dancers move and groove, they often work up a sweat which can lead to a STINK. Shoes can develop a strong and unpleasant odor over time due to all of the sweat and bacteria buildup, which carries over into frequently used dance bags! We've got four tips and tricks that can help you get rid of the dance bag stink...

  1. AIR IT OUT: The first step in eliminating dance bag odor is to air everything out. The best way to air everything out is to remove shoes from your dance bag and let them sit in a well-ventilated area for a few hours. If this isn't realistic, make sure that your dance bag is the appropriate size for your dance shoes, dance clothes, etc. and leave it open between uses.

  2. ODOR ELIMINATOR: That dance bag stink is STRONG, and the culprit is most definitely the shoes! In order to combat the funk coming from the feet, you can sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda inside each shoe and let it sit overnight. In the morning, shake out the baking soda and wipe the shoes with a damp cloth. If baking soda isn't for you, there are many sprays available specifically designed to eliminate shoe odor. Look for a spray that contains activated charcoal, which absorbs moisture and odors.

  3. WASH AND WIPE: If your dance shoes have removable insoles, wash them in the washing machine or by hand using a mild detergent. Allow them to air dry completely before placing them back in the shoes.

  4. UNCONVENTIONAL AND EFFECTIVE: If you're willing to try anything, we've got some 'home remedies' that may bring relief! Place your dance shoes in a plastic bag and freeze them overnight. The cold temperature will kill any bacteria causing the odor. If the thought of storing shoes with your frozen foods is stomach turning, you can try tea! Place a few unused tea bags inside each shoe and let them sit overnight. Tea contains tannins that can help absorb odor.

The intense work that goes into learning new steps, practicing choreography and working through a combo can bring the funk, and that odor tends to follow us home! Using these tips, you can effectively get rid of the dance shoe stink and keep your dance shoes smelling fresh.
